The Theme of Emancipation in A Doll's House & Girl by Jamaica Kincaid Essay

The Theme of Emancipation in A Doll's House and Girl by Jamaica Kincaid - Essay Example The two arms of the scale are similarly essential to find some kind of harmony. Unevenness prompts numerous issues. Ibsen in â€Å"A Doll’s House† builds up an amazing themeâ€that of liberation of a lady. What can a doll do? It will be constrained by the string to which it is appended. It has no free developments of its own. That is the sort of wedded life Nora and Torvald live. Nora’s accommodation to him is found in each part of her life; she is for sure the doll with human physical gear (body) Forget the developments, even her considerations are constrained by Torvald. A manikin has no presence of its own, and is absolutely reliant in its lord regarding what he will do with her. When Nora learns tarantella, unquestionably the controlling perspective gets self-evident. Out of sheer accommodation (and maybe concealed dread in the brain) Nora imagines that she regards him to relearn the move and its each move. Torvald treats Nora like a sex item to be delighte d in freely. He underestimates her sexual accommodation and as an issue of ideal for the spouse. After he finishes the meeting of encouraging her tarantella move, Torvald with the urge that uncovers his hankering for her body says, when she was rotating, his blood was beating and clearly he had compelling impulse for sex. He was continually watching her physical resources and didn’t care much about her feelings. Nora was in no state of mind to react and requested that he leave. Torvald advised her that he was her better half. This resoluteness with respect to Torvald shows that as a spouse he has the privilege to request physical joy from his significant other, voluntarily! Torvald has poor feeling about Nora; he treats her like a kid or a slave. She doesn’t have the opportunity to go through the cash which Torvald gives her on uncommon events. The accompanying discussion uncovers the fundamental hole in their mentality, when Torvald asks her whether she needs anything from him. Henrik Ibsen (2005, p.13) composes, â€Å"Nora :( talking rapidly) You may give me some cash, Torvald. Just barely as much as possible bear; and afterward before long, I will purchase something with it. Torvald: But, Nora†¦. Nora: Oh, do! Dear Torvald; kindly do! At that point I will envelop it with wonderful overlaid paper and drape it on the Christmas Tree. Won’t that be fun?†Torvald imagines that she would spend the cash on youngsters merchandise like treats and cake. She has a fixed obligation timetable of thinking about the youngsters, stay occupied with routine family unit work, and work on her needlepoint. She plays out the entirety of her appointed obligations, the principle goal of which is to please Torvald. The issues brought up in A Doll’s House by Ibsen, concern not a single instance of Nora versus Torvald, yet the whole womenfolk of the Victorian Society. There were limitations around ladies in each aspect of their life. A Doll†™s House isn't the tale of a House, however how the House accept the type of the jail for the ladies. They have no opportunity of free reasoning and their psyche is chained. Nora was dealt with like a youngster by her dad also - that was the structure of the general public concerning the treatment for ladies! Her significant other later obediently assumed control over the job of predominance. At each phase of life the development of the ladies was abridged. In numerous social orders and in numerous family units, the situation of ladies, even today is practically identical to the status of Nora. Indeed, even in some propelled nations, her position is equivalent according to the arrangements of the Constitution onlyâ€the society despite everything regards her as inconsistent with out of date social perspectives in regards to ladies. It is an instance of twofold issue. Ladies are slanted to utilize their ladylike appeal to make sure about what they need from men and stay fulfilled at that level. This is the attitude that one finds in A Doll’s House. Men like Torvald are worried about the controlling perspective and exercise

The Research Sample Is About Agriculture Revolution - 1925 Words

The Research Sample Is About Agriculture Revolution (Research Paper Sample) Content: Davenport UniversityResearch PaperAbstractThe current trends have really affected almost all sectors including the farming sector. Various researchers have been busy researching to obtain the best farming methods. Some of the recommendations that they have forwarded have been implemented while some are still hanging. Unlike the past, farming has taken a different direction. Currently, large-scale farmers have opted to subscribe to the use of technology in almost all the farming activities. The use of chemicals like pesticides has become investable. The paper focuses on the current Agricultural trends. It is evident that farming is one of the most crucial activities. The world of the farmer is one that is comprised of many aspects that may seem simple in nature but in all actuality, they are some of the most complicated aspects of our society that only a few people know about. Raising livestock or crops may seem simple enough but there are many different ways a producer can raise them. A farmer can grow crops and keep livestock in an industrial manner which involves the use of hormones, fertilizers, and even the use of crude vaccines. There is also a different, more profitable manner of growing crops and keeping livestock; this is the organic and free-range of raising livestock and crops. In this manner, animals are allowed to freely roam a large area of land where there is access to food, water and shelter whenever it is needed. Crops are grown in a fashion where there are alternating rows of different crops with a minimal use of pesticides and a use of organic fertilizer in various forms. Industrial farming is heading towards a major decline in its popularity due to the overuse of hormones and vaccinations that lower the quality of the meat. Although the total crop acreage in the United States is less than one percent, the United States is lagging behind other countries such as: Switzerland (11 percent), [and] Italy (9 percent) (Haynes, George, 2016, pg. 179). Despite this lagging, certified organic crop and livestock acreage have grown rapidly since 2010.Organic Agriculture and produce has been a subject of many debates over the past few decades, much of those debates were about Organic Agriculture being: better for the environment, better promotes biodiversity, better for soil replenishment, better tasting products, and longer shelf-life in certain situations. Organic Agriculture is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as Organic agriculture produces products using methods that preserve the environment and avoid most synthetic materials, such as pesticides and antibiotics (United States Department of Agriculture, 2016). Industrial Agriculture, as defined by the Union of Concerned Scientists is the system of chemically intensive food production featuring enormous single-crop farms and animal production facilities (Union of Concerned Scientists, n.d, n.p). Industrial Agriculture has also been on th e debate platform as well in the past few decades due to the fact that it has been known to use pesticides; pesticides that have been known to cause diseases and various other health problems. Health problems that include, but are not limited to cancer, blood disorders, nerve disorders, birth defects, reproduction defects, and hormone disruption. Although there are some advantages to Industrial Agriculture, which include but are not limited to lower costs, higher yields, resistance to the elements, and year-round growing. These advantages only come after various disadvantages and risks are diluted by the apparent advantages. Organic Agriculture is far more superior than Industrial Agriculture due to the greater positive impact it does to the environment when compared to industrial agriculture. When there is a label on a food product that instructs the buyer to wash first, there is a cause for concern. Pesticides leave behind a residue that is minuscule but causes harm to the consumer when the product is consumed over a long period of time. This is especially true for children, fetuses, and elderly people because of their age, immune system, brains, and bodies are still developing or are diminished. Women who are pregnant are more susceptible to the side effects of pesticides due to the stress associated with pregnancy. Pesticides can be passed from mother to child and mother to fetus via breast milk that is tainted and absorption of pesticides through the skin which ultimately reaches the blood stream and the fetus. One of the most used pesticides in the United States is Atrazine, researchers in Indiana are finding that a rare birth defect called gastroschisis shows up more among babies conceived when atrazine levels are high (Specht et al 2014, ). Industrial farming still uses Atrazine as a herbicide to control weeds in corn, soybean, and tomato fields, but it is primarily used in corn fields it is applied to 69% of all the corn acreage in the United States. The main dangers of Atrazine and other triazine chemical herbicides fall upon those who work in the fields, such as farmers and migrant workers who are tending to the crops. The chemicals enter their bodies through the skin, inhalation, and ingestion of the product that has been treated with Atrazine. The chemicals used in Industrial agriculture are never used in Organic Agriculture; this is why there is a greater biodiversity- a biological diversity, on farmlands where Organic agriculture is used. In the farmlands where Industrial agriculture used, there is little biodiversity because the chemicals used in the process of growing produce are often lethal to various animals and insects, which are actually beneficial to the produce being grown. Those organisms that are not killed by the chemical are quite often mutated, as is the case in a UC Berkeley study on Atrazine and leopard frogs. The study showed that atrazine at levels often found in the environment from runoff often demasculi nizes tadpoles and turns them into hermaphrodites; organisms with both male and female reproductive organs. The study also found lower levels of the male hormone testosterone in sexually mature frogs by a multiple of 10, these levels of testosterone are lower than that of normal female frogs. Frogs are not the only organisms that are affected by the use of pesticides, herbicides, and the runoff of these chemicals. The herbicide also contaminates drinking water supplies in many communities in the Midwest (Laursen, 2014). This is cause for concern for not only the biodiversity of the environment but also for our lives, for humans need water to survive, it is a vital resource that is needed by not only ourselves but also the flora and fauna of the environment. In contrast, organically farmed areas have, on average; there is 30 percent more special and 50 percent more individuals when compared to non-organically farmed areas. The main causes of such an increase in biodiversity are large ly in part to the forgoing the use of herbicides and chemically synthesised pesticides, as well as the implementation of a more diversified agriculture structure, a conservation of tillage and a more diversified crop rotation with a higher clover grass percentage. It is through this agricultural structure that the produce and products have a far more concentrated amount of nutrients and minerals. There has been a decrease in nutrients in industrially grown produce, specifically corn, broccoli, and wheat. There are various reasons as to why this is occurring, the two major causes are monoculture and the over-use of fertilizers. A monoculture is a field that is composed of a single crop rather than multiple crop species, in order to grow the same plant year after year in the same place there is an overuse of fertilizers because of the constant and numerous sowing of seeds within the same year. The overuse of fertilizers and herbicides depletes the soil of natural nutrients and minerals that plants rely on, the only way to quickly replenish the nutrients is by using synthesized fertilizers. Pesticides are used due to the fact that monoculture fields are a vast attractant to certain insect pests and weeds. There has been a sharp decline in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients in many foods (Barak, Lyne, 2000, n.p). Minerals are a vital part of a humans diet and metabolism, we as humans get the vital nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants from plants and occasionally animals. However, there is no plant or animal that can incorporate vitamins and minerals into its body when there is none in the soil from which it obtains feeds. Organic plants have been found to have more vitamins, minerals, and have 60 percent more antioxidants than their conventionally grown version (Danes et al 2016). This is because plants produce chemicals that ultimately produce antioxidants when responding to environmental stress which include pests, diseases, and a lack of soil nutrients. Si nce industrially grown produce and products are more sheltered from these environmental factors and other various stresses, through pesticides, other various growing practices, and other agricultural structures, the plants have no need or particular impetus to produce antioxidants. Whereas organically grown produce has fertile soil which is fertilized with compost, manure and other organic matter. Through this type of fertilization and growing process, organic crops [have] an 18 to 69% higher percent concentration of antioxidant compounds, which are said to ha...

The Effects Of Childcare And Non Parental Guardians

The National adoption Agency defines foster care as â€Å"a temporary arrangement in which adults provide for the care of a child or children whose birthparent is unable to care for them. Foster care is not where juvenile delinquents go. It is where children go when their parents cannot, for a variety of reasons, care for them. Foster care can be informal or arranged through the courts or a social service agency. The goal for a child in the foster care system is usually reunification with the birth family, but may be changed to adoption when this is seen in the child s best interest. While foster care is temporary, adoption is permanent.† (Unknown, 2015) Understanding foster care placement is essential to completely evaluate both its rewards and drawbacks. In doing so, one must take a detailed look at the effects of childcare by non-parental guardians. Foster care must be discussed and observed, children living with the biological parent sometimes live in an atmosphere that does not promote the child social and emotional growth. When the configuration of the household changes the child pays the biggest price. Occasionally families are separated due to differences in lifestyles within the family or behavioral problems that may lead to developmental delays. The Political Context Of Education - 1504 Words

Sarah K. Hutchins Final Exam December 12, 2014 ELE 352-001 DeWalt Stephen F. Austin State University Fall 2013 Final Exam The political context of education today has a lot to do with how its purpose has changed over time. Throughout history, there have been two competing purposes of education –public aims and advancing the interests of individual economic consumers who want more societal access and advantage (Labaree, 2011). These two competing views have illustrated the evolution of the purpose of education from keeping the faith, to preserving the republic, to stimulating the economy, to finally promoting social opportunity (Labaree, 2011). Currently, education is seen as a private commodity for social opportunity in†¦show more content†¦The resulting system is one where educational success is measured by standardized tests and where students are put into tracking systems that can permanently affect what sort of opportunities they receive in this country (Mayer, 2008). The hallmark of this system is the rising educational levels of our nation citizens and the huge achievement gap we s ee in schools and in our society (Tamir, 2011). Society plays a huge role in education because it helps define its purpose. Labaree (2011) asserted that one of the main reasons for education reform was because school needed to adapt itself to help society realize its new ideals, which have involved faith, civic virtue, economic efficiency, racial equality, or individual liberty in the past. The role society has played in American education, however, can’t be explored until the concept of meritocracy is understood. There is a belief in American society that if one works hard, then they can achieve their dream. This is called meritocracy and it is a defining feature of American society and education itself. This belief, however, is not always exhibited in America’s classrooms or in its society. In education, tracking is a large threat to education’s promotion of social equality (Mayer, 2008). Many of the students in low-track curriculums are ethnic minorities from low socioeconomic backgrounds (Mayer, 2008). The reason for this can be seen in the causes of the large gaps we see in our society.

Causes of an Unhealthy Diet free essay sample

The Causes of An Unhealthy Diet There are many causes for an unhealthy diet. The causes themselves can range from person to person, but generally there are some that are identical from one person to another. The general causes that stand out the most include personal expense, believing current eating habits is healthy enough, and knowing a change is needed but doing little to change it. What you eat, whether you think about it or not, relies mostly on what you can afford. For example a college student like me, would find it more affordable to make some Macaroni and Cheese then go to a healthy restaurant. Also with expense, convenience can be included. Like the previous example a quick meal loaded with calories and other fats would be more convenient for a college student than making a five course meal from scratch. In the end the $0. 99 macaroni would be the more economical way to go. We will write a custom essay sample on Causes of an Unhealthy Diet or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page A big mistake a lot of people make is thinking what they currently eat is healthy enough already. They will attempt to stick to the food pyramids suggested servings, but will pay little attention to actual ingredients in the food. Two perfect examples are pasta and juice. Out of convenience, Pasta Roni is used for a quick flavorful meal. Little attention is given to the preservatives and ample amount of sodium included in each box. Fruit juice is possibly the worst culprit. You drink your juice thinking you’re getting your servings for the day. In actuality you’re getting 10% actual juice and an unhealthy overload of sugars and food colorings. It really pays to read all the nutrition facts when planning a healthy meal change. Finally, knowing a change is needed and providing resistance is a major contributor to an unhealthy diet. For most of us having a set schedule or favorite food is hard to change. For example, the thought of having to give up Chicago Style Hot Dogs for the sake of a healthier diet would not be a sacrifice I would be willing to make. And then there those who simply resist all efforts of change from nutrition to exercise. They are so set in their ways nothing will change their minds. Unfortunately these are the people you usually see with the serious health problems or obesity due to unhealthy diets. There will always be causes for an unhealthy diet. It is the individuals’ responsibility to recognize and manage those causes. Whether the causes are monetary, lack of interest in actual ingredients, or resistance to change. The final outcome will be based on the individuals’ decisions thus making overall health a personal problem.

Gender roles free essay sample

Do you ever imagine being born the opposite sex? I know I have days where I wish I was the opposite sex. To me being a female is a blessing and a curse, women were always supposed to be the home makers and men were always supposed to be the bread winners. In todays day and age I believe those roles can be swapped or even both can be bread winners. I am definitely know I am not attending college to support someone else though I know that much! If I were born a male my life would be a lot different I believe. One of the first things that pops into my head is being so emotional over the littlest things. I think if i were born a male I definitely would have a harder shell and not be so emotional, I am tough and strong but little things get to me and I just get sappy and emotional. We will write a custom essay sample on Gender roles or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Something that occurred to me was that I dont think it would have taken me as long as it did to accept myself and love myself. I feel like most guys have an easier time with self confidence so if I were the opposite sex that would have been different. Also I think that if I were born a male I would behave a lot like my brothers just because we all grew up doing everything together and I as a female I think my behavior was a little more conservative than theirs was! Simple things would be different as well, I dont think that if I were a boy my favorite color would be pink or I wouldnt be driving the same car with a bunch of bling on it either! I think if I were a male I would play sports, probably baseball because as a girl I played softball and I enjoyed it but didnt stick with it†¦maybe that would have been different if I were a boy, it might have been easier to stick to. I could also imagine myself wanting to be a jock or someone that was involved in school activities. To me boys have it way easier in that they dont have to endure childbirth or pregnancy. To be able to bear a child though, the woman gets a chance to create a special bond with the baby like no man can, that is one of the upsides of being a woman! I am a very girly woman and I could NOT imagine being like this as a boy, in fact I would probably be so anti-sparkle as a boy, makes me sad just to think about! In terms of picking a partner, I would probably go for someone who was similar to myself. I would want someone who could definitely make me laugh, and has similar morals and values in life. I like outgoing people and think if I were a boy I would be outgoing, but being a female and the person I am today, I am shy and reserved before I get to know someone and I think if I were a boy looking for a girl I would probably choose someone who is shy, not sure why though! After thinking about all of this I would not trade being a female†¦I love my life just how it is and being a girl has SOO many advantages that being a boy would never have! Although it is interesting to think about being a boy and all the things that would be different in my life.

Research Paper Topics That Create Sympathy Among College Students

Research Paper Topics That Create Sympathy Among College StudentsWriting a research paper can be difficult for those that do not know where to start or what to write about. However, starting with research paper topics that are closely related to the subject matter of the paper will make the task much easier. These are the research paper topics that most professors will assign. In an ideal world, students would take a survey of current issues, statistics, and policy proposals relating to social services issues. However, this is not always the case, and public administration students must take the initiative to find information. In doing so, students can use their research papers to examine how these issues fit into the policy arena of the United States. The topics chosen should be found to be relevant to the policy decisions that are being made. This is where students have to be careful.Because there are so many issues to discuss, students should be sure that they take care to select t opics that are not similar. For example, a public policy decision may determine how much spending money goes to social services, or how many immigrants come into the country. Finding topics that are not similar is difficult because topics that are not closely related tend to be controversial. Therefore, students need to be sure that they choose topics that are both relevant and controversial.A research paper topic that is highly controversial is often referred to as a 'hot button' topic. This type of research paper topic is usually not a direct result of public policy decisions. It can result from polls and surveys that reveal that a large percentage of the population feels strongly about an issue, and they feel strongly enough that the government should intervene.Another controversial issue that is very close to the surface of public policy decisions is abortion. Research paper topics in this area often focus on whether abortions should be legal, the number of abortions occurring e ach year, and other related questions. If students choose to include this type of research paper topic, they must be careful to provide a balanced and accurate look at the public policy issues that are related to abortion.Other topics for research paper topics include controversial issues such as gay marriage and the legalization of marijuana. Students can choose to focus on different laws or strategies for legalizing these types of relationships. In addition, when they are writing a research paper about these topics, students will want to be sure that they discuss the pros and cons of these policies.Since research papers require a large amount of student's time, they should be written in such a way that students will not become bored during the course of the semester. Students should learn how to write a research paper by first writing an outline for the paper. If an outline is not used, then students will need to spend more time finding topics that are unique to the class. Finally, public administration students should take advantage of online resources in order to research topics for their research paper topics. There are several websites that feature topics and they include resources that students can use for guidance.

Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsEssay Writing Service

Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsEssay Writing Service Essay on Prisons and the War on Drugs Essay on Prisons and the War on DrugsThe video War on Drugs Dramatically Increases Prison Population discusses the social and financial costs of the War on Drugs, including the costs of criminal justice, increased budget, reduced resources for providing the proper social services, etc. (University of Notre Dame, 1999; Korgen Furst, 2012). As the issue of drug abuse has been identified as an important social problem, it is necessary to explore the consequences of our reliance on punishment as a solution to drug abuse. There are certain differences between a culture’s folkways, mores, and taboos. A folkway can be defined as a norm for human behavior that should be followed for the sake of convenience or the established tradition. A more can be defined as a strict norm that is based on morality, which helps to differentiate what is right and what is wrong. A taboo is the strictest norm in society that can bring the most severe sanctions. Some of these notions are considered to b e infractions of normative expectations termed criminal and others social. This definitional process leads us to incarcerate fellow citizens based on the established laws and regulations regarding drug abuse. There are several sociological factors that contribute to the criminalization of individuals in society, including racial prejudice, illegal immigration, unemployment, poor education of immigrants, mental health problems, etc. Criminalization is based on the application of certain laws to certain behaviors of individuals. Today all types of deviant behaviors are known as criminal. The deviance caused by drug abuse requires social control. Drug users are considered to be mentally ill people, or the people with serious forms of neurotic personality.   Although the action of a drug user is criminal, he/she need therapeutic assistance. The seriousness of drug abuse justifies our reliance on the social consequences of incarceration. Due to the stricter policies aimed at reducing d rug abuse rate; there are many prisoners who were involved in trafficking illegal drugs and who were incarcerated based on the established laws and regulations. Prisons should not only punish prisoners, but also rehabilitate them. Undoubtedly, incarceration would have a strong impact on our society and future generation. The current state of prisons in the U.S. should be reconsidered.

Leaders and Groups Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Leaders and Groups - Essay Example In the case of a wicked leader, the manner of motivation and the type of goal are such that these are despised, or not liked, by the people. For example, the leader may use fear or unnecessary force that tramples on the freedom of the people. In the process, those who are led in this way work towards the goal because they have no better choice. Dictators like Hitler and Stalin are prime examples of the last century who led this way. And to add insult to injury, the goal - such as killing innocent people - may be equally despicable. So while they can be called leaders, the way they exercise it and the goals they have set were wicked. It would be enough that one of the two - either the means of motivation or the goal - is despicable to make the leader a wicked one. The good leaders are the opposite of the wicked leaders: the means used to motivate and the goals towards which everyone are led to work for are acceptable or not despicable. In fact, these may even be very good, so the people who are led this way end up loving and respecting their leader. The same can be said of great leaders, those whose people can say that they were the ones who did the work themselves. If this is the case, what is the difference between good leaders and great leaders Before considering what these differences are, it would be good to discuss the other similarities these two types of leaders share. First, good and great leaders have a good knowledge of human nature, of what motivates people and makes them do things, no matter how arduous they may seem. These types of leaders know how to inspire their people by appealing to the whole range of human qualities, desires, emotions, and aspirations they all share: doing a good job, being happy doing what they like, etc. Second, these types of leaders are good at communicating the goals they want everyone to achieve. They exhibit leadership qualities like patience, optimism, humor, discipline, and the ability to get things done, among other qualities, that make those they lead admire them, perhaps even look up to them as role models they can imitate and follow. However, where great leaders differ from good leaders is in the way great leaders make those they lead feel that they worked hard as a team and that their efforts were recognized. Great leaders are not afraid to praise and thank their people, raising them in front of others to highlight their unique contributions to the success the team accomplished. So, while people under good leaders were able to succeed because their leader was good, thereby focusing on the good qualities the leader possessed, those under great leaders acknowledge the same but are prouder of the fact that their efforts, acknowledged by their leader, made them better persons. An example of a great leader was Churchill, British Prime Minister during the Second World War, who by words and example led the British and their allies towards victory against a more powerful enemy and against overwhelming odds (Jenkins, 2001, p. 477). Another example was Lou V. Gerstner, IBM's CEO until 2002, who exhibited the same great leadership qualities in bringing the company back from the brink of business disaster (Gerstner, 2002). These great leaders are
